Spilled Coffee or Water on Your Laptop? Do This Right Away
A spill on a laptop is an emergency, but what you do in the next few minutes matters most. Here is the right order of steps, and the myths to avoid.
It happens in an instant: a mug tips over, a glass slides, and liquid runs across the keyboard. Laptops can often be saved after a spill, but the first few minutes make a big difference. Here is what to do, in order.
Step 1: Cut the power immediately
- Unplug the charger.
- Hold the power button until the laptop turns off. Do not wait to save your work or shut down normally.
Electricity plus liquid is what causes most of the damage. Liquid that sits on a powered circuit board starts corroding it right away.
Step 2: Disconnect everything
Unplug USB drives, mice, cables and anything else attached. If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.
Step 3: Drain it
- Turn the laptop upside down in a tent shape, with the keyboard facing down, on a towel.
- Gently wipe any liquid you can reach on the outside.
- Do not shake it hard. That spreads liquid into new areas.
Step 4: Do not turn it back on to "test it"
This is the hardest part. A laptop that seems fine after a spill can still have liquid sitting on the board. Turning it on can cause a short that turns a fixable problem into a much bigger one.
Myths to avoid
- Rice does not help. It does not pull liquid out from under chips, and the dust can get inside.
- A hair dryer is a bad idea. Heat can damage parts and push liquid deeper.
- "It dried out, so it is fine." Sugary and acidic drinks such as coffee, soda and juice leave residue behind that keeps corroding the board even after the water evaporates.
What kind of liquid was it?
Tell your repair shop exactly what was spilled. It changes the cleanup.
- Plain water is the least harmful, but still conducts electricity.
- Coffee, tea, soda and juice leave sticky, corrosive residue. Keys often start sticking within days.
- Alcohol, wine and beer are also corrosive and sugary.
Your files come first
If the laptop holds important files without a backup, say so up front. In many cases the storage drive survives a spill even when the laptop does not, and the data can be copied off before any repair. Our data recovery and backup service can help.
What a proper repair looks like
A liquid damage repair usually means opening the laptop, checking where the liquid went, cleaning the board and connectors, and testing each part. Sometimes a keyboard, trackpad or other part needs replacing. Before any work starts, we explain what we found and whether the repair makes sense for that laptop. If it is not worth fixing, we will tell you.
Prevent the next spill
- Keep drinks on a separate side table, not next to the laptop.
- Use mugs and bottles with lids at your desk.
- Back up your files regularly, so a spill never costs you your work.
