Laptop Screen Flickering, Lines or Black? What It Usually Means

Flickering, colored lines or a black screen do not always mean the screen is broken. Here is how to tell whether it is the display, the cable, the graphics or software.

When a laptop screen starts flickering, shows colored lines or goes black, most people assume the screen needs replacing. Often it does, but not always. The same symptoms can come from a loose cable, the graphics chip or even a driver update. A few simple tests point you in the right direction.

The most useful test: connect an external monitor

Plug your laptop into a TV or monitor with an HDMI or USB-C cable.

  • The external display looks perfect: the problem is likely the laptop screen itself or the cable that connects it.
  • The external display has the same problem: the issue is more likely the graphics hardware or software.

Does it change when you move the lid?

Slowly open and close the screen while watching it.

  • Flickering or lines that come and go with the lid angle usually point to the display cable or connector running through the hinge. This cable flexes every time you open the laptop and can wear out over the years.
  • No change with movement points more toward the screen panel or graphics.

Common symptoms and likely causes

Flickering

  • Driver issues after a Windows or macOS update
  • Power-saving or refresh rate settings
  • A worn display cable
  • A failing backlight

Vertical or horizontal lines

  • Lines that stay in the same place often mean a damaged screen panel, especially after a drop or pressure on the lid.
  • Lines that also show on the startup logo, before Windows or macOS loads, point to hardware rather than software.

Black screen but the laptop is on

  • Shine a flashlight at the screen. If you can faintly see the picture, the backlight has failed but the panel may be fine.
  • Check brightness keys and press the display switch key combination, in case the image is being sent to an external display.
  • No picture at all may be the screen, cable or graphics, and needs testing.

Spreading black or colored blotches

These usually come from pressure or impact damage, such as closing the lid on a pen or earbuds. The screen panel needs replacing, and the damage often spreads over time.

Software fixes to try first

  1. Restart the laptop.
  2. Install updates, including graphics driver updates from the laptop maker.
  3. If the problem started right after an update, rolling back the graphics driver may help on Windows.
  4. Try a different refresh rate in display settings if the option is available.

When to bring it in

  • Lines or flicker show on the startup logo
  • The problem changes when you move the lid
  • There is visible damage, blotches or cracks
  • The external monitor test shows the problem too
