Cracked iPhone Back Glass: Should You Fix It or Ignore It?

A cracked back on your iPhone looks cosmetic, but it can let in moisture and cut your fingers. Here is when back glass repair matters and what to expect.

Most iPhones made in recent years have glass on the back as well as the front. It looks great and makes wireless charging possible, but it also means a drop can crack the back even when the screen survives. Many people decide to live with it. Sometimes that is fine, and sometimes it is a mistake.

Is a cracked back just cosmetic?

Not always. A cracked back can cause real problems:

  • Cut fingers. Small shards and sharp edges can catch skin, especially near the camera.
  • Moisture and dust. Cracks weaken the seal that helps protect the phone from water and dust. Even a phone that was water resistant when new should be treated as if it is not.
  • Spreading cracks. Glass under stress keeps cracking. A small corner crack can spread across the back with daily use and pocket pressure.
  • Camera problems. If the crack reaches the camera area, the lens cover can chip, causing blurry or hazy photos.
  • Lower trade-in or resale value. Cracked backs are usually graded as damaged.

When you can safely wait

You can usually hold off for a while if:

  • The crack is small and away from the camera
  • No glass is flaking or missing
  • The phone is in a case that covers the back fully
  • You keep it away from water, including rain and bathroom steam

Put clear tape or a back skin over the crack as a short-term fix to keep shards in place.

When to repair it soon

  • Glass is flaking, chipping or missing
  • The crack reaches the camera lenses
  • The phone feels warm or wireless charging has become unreliable
  • You see a bulge, gap or the back lifting at the edges

That last one is important. A back that is lifting can be a sign of a swollen battery, which needs attention right away. Do not press on it and do not keep charging it overnight.

What the repair involves

Back glass is bonded to the phone's frame, so replacing it is more involved than a screen. A proper repair means removing the old glass carefully, cleaning the frame, and fitting new glass so the camera openings and wireless charging still line up. We check the camera, flash, microphones and wireless charging before the phone goes back to you.

During the repair we also look at the battery and the rest of the phone. If anything else needs attention, we tell you before doing any extra work.

Protect the new back

  • Use a case with raised edges around the camera and corners.
  • Consider a back protector if you prefer a thin case or none at all.
  • Avoid back pockets. Sitting on a phone puts a lot of stress on the glass.
