Computer Won't Start? How to Get Your Files Back First

When a computer will not boot, your files are usually still on the drive. Here is what to avoid, what you can safely try, and how files are recovered from a dead PC or Mac.

A computer that will not start is stressful. A computer that will not start and holds the only copy of your photos, documents or business files is worse. The good news: when a computer fails to boot, the files are usually still there. The key is not to make things worse while getting them back.

Why computers stop booting

  • Windows or macOS problems after an update, a power cut or a forced shutdown
  • A failing storage drive, which can make the computer slow, freeze or not start
  • Other hardware failures such as memory, power or the motherboard
  • Malware or ransomware

In most of these cases, the drive and the files on it are fine. Only a failing drive puts the data itself at risk, and that changes what you should do.

What not to do

  • Do not reinstall Windows or reset the Mac to "fix" it. Many reset options erase your files.
  • Do not run repair tools again and again. On a failing drive, every attempt adds wear.
  • Do not keep restarting a computer that clicks, buzzes or freezes. These are signs of a failing drive. See our guide on clicking or undetected hard drives.
  • Do not open the drive. Hard drives must only be opened in a clean environment.

What you can safely try

If the computer shows no signs of drive failure:

  1. Unplug everything except the power, keyboard and mouse, then try again.
  2. Let Windows try Startup Repair once, if it offers to.
  3. Try Safe Mode on Windows, or Safe Mode on a Mac, to rule out a bad driver or startup program.
  4. On a Mac, try the built-in recovery mode and Disk Utility's First Aid once.

If you can get in, copy your most important files to an external drive straight away, before trying anything else.

How files are recovered from a computer that will not start

When the computer cannot start but the drive is healthy, recovery is usually straightforward:

  • The drive is removed and connected to another computer, or the computer is started from a separate recovery tool.
  • The files are copied to a new drive or external drive.
  • You check that everything you need is there.

Some newer laptops, including recent MacBooks, have storage built into the main board. Recovery on those depends on getting the computer itself working, so it is important to tell your repair shop up front that the files matter.

Encryption matters too. If BitLocker or FileVault is on, recovery needs the recovery key or your password. Check your Microsoft or Apple account for the key before you need it.

Your options after the files are safe

Once your files are copied off, you can choose calmly:

  • Repair the computer
  • Reinstall Windows or macOS on a new drive
  • Replace the computer and move your files to it

Set up backups so it never happens again

The best data recovery is not needing it. Our guide to the 3-2-1 backup rule explains a simple setup that protects you from drive failures, theft and ransomware.
