Accidentally Deleted Photos or Files: Can They Be Recovered?

Deleted something important? Often there is still a chance to get it back. Here is where to look first, what to avoid, and when to get recovery help.

That sinking feeling after deleting the wrong folder, emptying the trash, or watching a memory card suddenly go blank is something almost everyone experiences eventually. The good news is that deleted does not always mean gone. The most important thing is what you do next, so take a breath and read this before you do anything else.

First: stop using the device

When you delete a file, the computer, phone or memory card usually marks that space as available rather than erasing it immediately. Until new data is written over that space, recovery may still be possible. That means:

  • Stop saving new files, photos or downloads to the device.
  • Do not install recovery software onto the same drive that held the deleted files.
  • For memory cards and USB drives, remove them and set them aside.
  • For phones, avoid taking new photos or videos until you have checked the options below.

Check the easy places first

Many "lost" files are not lost at all. Look here before assuming the worst:

  1. The Recycle Bin or Trash. Files often sit there until it is emptied.
  2. Recently Deleted on phones and tablets. Photo apps commonly keep deleted photos in a recently deleted album for a period of time before removing them permanently.
  3. Your cloud account. Many cloud services have their own trash or deleted files area, and some keep previous versions of files.
  4. Other devices. A photo deleted from one phone may still be on a computer, a tablet, or a family member's shared album.
  5. Your backups. Windows File History, Time Machine on a Mac, or an external backup drive may have a copy from before the deletion.

Previous versions of documents

If you saved over a document rather than deleting it, check whether your program or cloud service offers version history. On Windows, right-clicking a folder may show earlier versions if File History was turned on. On a Mac, Time Machine lets you browse back to earlier dates.

When the file is truly deleted

If it is not in any trash folder or backup, recovery depends on several factors:

  • How long ago it was deleted and how much the device has been used since
  • The type of storage. Traditional hard drives, solid-state drives, phones and memory cards behave differently. Many solid-state drives and modern phones clear deleted data quickly as part of normal operation, which can make recovery much harder.
  • Whether the device is physically healthy. A drive that is also clicking or failing needs a different approach entirely.

We will not pretend every deleted file can be brought back; it cannot. But careful handling gives you the best possible chance.

About do-it-yourself recovery software

Consumer recovery programs can work for simple cases, such as a recently emptied Recycle Bin on a healthy drive. If you try one:

  • Install it on a different drive or computer
  • Save recovered files to a different drive, never the one you are recovering from
  • Stop if the drive makes unusual noises or the computer freezes

If the files are irreplaceable, such as a wedding album, the only photos of a loved one or important business records, consider bringing it in before experimenting. A failed attempt can sometimes make professional recovery harder.

Special cases

Formatted memory cards

If a camera or computer asked to format a card and you said yes, stop using the card immediately. Do not put it back in the camera.

Water-damaged phones or laptops

Power the device off and do not try to charge it. Water damage can still allow data recovery in some cases, but repeated attempts to turn it on can cause further harm. Our iPhone and smartphone repair and computer and laptop repair services can help assess the device itself.

Computers that will not boot

Your files may be perfectly fine even if Windows or macOS will not start. Do not reinstall the operating system until your data has been copied off.

When to bring it in

Bring the device to us when the files are important, when the easy checks above come up empty, or when the device is damaged or behaving strangely. Our data recovery and backup service handles deleted files, failed drives, USB and external drives, SSDs, water-damaged devices and computers that will not boot. We will tell you honestly what we find before any work begins.
