iPad Screen Repair: Is It Worth It for an Older iPad?
Wondering whether to fix the cracked screen on an older iPad? This honest guide walks through updates, battery health, how you use it and more.
iPads tend to stick around. Many families have one that has been passed from parent to kid to grandparent, still used every day for video calls, recipes, reading and games. So when that older iPad ends up with a cracked screen, the question is a fair one: is it worth fixing?
Here is an honest way to decide.
Start with what the iPad is for
The right answer depends a lot on how you use it.
- Light use: reading, email, video calls, streaming, recipes and simple games. Older iPads often still handle these just fine.
- Heavy use: schoolwork with demanding apps, drawing, video editing or the newest games. These may push an older iPad past what it can comfortably do.
If the iPad still does everything you need, a repair is often a sensible way to keep it going.
Check whether it still gets updates
This is one of the most important questions. Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update.
- If it still receives updates, it is getting security fixes and should keep working with most apps for a while.
- If it no longer receives updates, it will gradually lose support. Some apps will stop updating or stop working, and it becomes less secure for things like banking and shopping.
An iPad that no longer gets updates can still be a perfectly good device for reading, music or as a kid's game tablet, but it changes how much it makes sense to invest in it.
Look at the battery
An older iPad with a tired battery may need a battery replacement soon too. Notice whether:
- It drains much faster than it used to
- It shuts off unexpectedly
- It only works while plugged in
- The screen is lifting or the case is bulging
That last one matters for safety. If the screen is being pushed up from inside, stop charging and using the iPad and bring it in. A swollen battery should be handled promptly.
If the battery is also worn, it is worth knowing that before you decide, because doing both repairs adds up.
Understand what kind of screen it has
iPad screens are not all built the same:
- Some models have separate glass and display. On these, if only the outer glass is cracked and the picture underneath looks fine, it may be possible to replace just the glass.
- Other models have the glass and display bonded together as one unit. On these, a crack usually means replacing the whole screen assembly.
We can tell you which kind your iPad has and what that means for the repair.
Signs a repair makes sense
A screen repair is usually worth it when:
- The iPad still gets software updates, or you only use it for simple things.
- The battery is in decent shape.
- The only problem is the screen.
- There is a sentimental or practical reason to keep it, such as a grandparent who knows exactly how to use it.
Signs it might be time to move on
It may be better to put the money toward a newer iPad when:
- It no longer gets updates and you need it for school, work or banking.
- The battery is also failing, or there are other problems like a bad charging port or bent frame.
- It is already too slow for what you want to do.
We will tell you if we think a repair is not a good use of your money. There is no pressure either way.
In the meantime
If you need to keep using a cracked iPad for a few days:
- Cover the crack with clear packing tape to keep glass splinters off fingers.
- Keep it away from small children until it is fixed.
- Back it up with iCloud or a computer, in case the touch screen stops working.
What about data?
A screen repair does not usually affect what is stored on the iPad. Still, back it up first. Go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup, and tap Back Up Now. If the screen is too damaged to use, tell us and we will work with you.
