Apple Watch Cracked Screen or Weak Battery: Your Repair Options
A cracked Apple Watch screen or a battery that will not last the day does not always mean buying a new watch. Here is how to weigh your repair options.
An Apple Watch takes a lot of everyday knocks: door frames, countertops, workouts and the occasional fall. Sooner or later many owners end up with either a cracked screen or a battery that no longer makes it to bedtime. Before you assume you need a new watch, it is worth knowing what your options really are.
Cracked or shattered screen
A small crack might look cosmetic, but it is worth taking seriously:
- Water resistance is compromised. Once the glass is cracked, the seal that keeps sweat, rain and pool water out is no longer reliable.
- Cracks tend to spread. Daily wear and temperature changes can make a small crack grow.
- Touch problems can follow. Ghost touches or dead areas on the screen often appear as damage worsens.
- Sharp edges. Broken glass on your wrist can cut skin.
What to do right away
- Keep it dry. Skip swimming, showering and heavy workouts with the watch until it is repaired.
- Cover sharp edges with a small piece of clear tape if glass is chipping.
- Make sure it is paired and backed up. An Apple Watch is normally backed up through its paired iPhone, so keep the phone nearby and updated.
- Do not press hard on the cracked area trying to make it respond.
Weak or swelling battery
Like every rechargeable battery, the one in your watch wears down with age and charge cycles. Signs it may be time for a replacement:
- The watch no longer lasts a normal day
- It shuts down unexpectedly, especially during workouts or in the cold
- It gets unusually warm while charging
- The screen is lifting or bulging away from the case
A swollen battery is a safety issue
If the display is being pushed up from underneath, the battery may be swelling. Stop wearing and charging the watch and keep it away from heat. Do not try to press the screen back down or pry it open. Bring it in so it can be handled safely.
Try these before assuming the battery is bad
Some battery complaints are actually settings or software. These are worth a try first:
- Install the latest watchOS and iOS updates
- Check Battery Health in the watch's Settings app, if your model shows it
- Turn off features you do not use, such as always-on display or background app refresh for certain apps
- Restart the watch and its paired iPhone
- Clean the back of the watch and the charger, and try a different power adapter
If battery life is still poor after that, a battery replacement is often a sensible fix.
Repair or replace?
Think about these questions:
- Does the watch still meet your needs? If you like it and it still receives updates, repair usually makes sense.
- Is there other damage? A bent case, water damage or a failing crown can change the math.
- Is there sentimental or practical value in keeping your current watch, bands and setup?

OEM or aftermarket parts
At Alpha Computers you choose the parts: OEM or high-quality aftermarket. We will explain the differences in plain language so you can pick what fits your budget and how you use the watch.
Do-it-yourself repair: our honest take
Apple Watch screens are bonded to the case, and the parts inside are tiny and tightly packed. The display and battery cables are easy to damage, and getting a proper seal afterward takes the right tools and adhesive. For most people, this is not a good first DIY repair. A slip can turn a screen replacement into a much bigger problem.
